Ah, the immigration debate, the one place where a middle-class white boy can really shine.
I have refrained from actively taking part in this over the past few days just because I'm not an immigrant and whatever gets decided won't have much of a bearing on me. My noble Scottish ancestors made their way to this country more than a century ago, and what is being proposed isn't retroactive to me. It's not like tomorrow me and my family are going to be rounded up and dumped off in Glasgow.
You can draw an interconected web that shows that somewhere along the way, an undocumented worker probably affects my life, but I doubt it is a major impact.
I watched the student marches over the weekend and the fact that they were probably marching for their parents' rights as much as their own struck me as interesting. These kids are mostly American citizens while their parents may not be.
There was a televised debate in the last hour on CNN between Lou Dobbs and Univision anchor Maria Salinas. Salinas is the daughter of two immigrants, one undocumented, and Dobbs is an outspoken critic of current immigration policy. He pointed out that more than half of Hispanic teens drop out of high school. She pointed out that more than half of all illegal immigrants come from countries other than Mexico and Latin America.
I have to wonder how many of those dropouts do so because they have to work to help support their families. A guest worker program might help bring these people out of transient labor and into the working pool, freeing up their children to attend regular school and make themselves a better life. That's not a concrete answer, but it is a place to start.
I just can't get myself whipped up into a nationalistic fervor the way Dobbs is over this. What does it mean to be American if we reject out of hand any kind amnesty? They are breaking laws that Dobbs himself agrees are broken and unworkable. Just how important is illegal labor to our economy? If the middle class should really be so worried about undocumented workers taking their jobs away, that speaks to a much bigger problem than just illegal immigration. How much should the moral componenet of helping our brother man play into this?
I have a lot of questions and no one seems to have any answers.

I just don't have much to say lately, but eh. Pretty much nothing notable happening worth mentioning. I've more or less been doing nothing worth mentioning.
