The legal brothels of Nevada are practically begging the state legislature to tax them. If that's not American, I don't know what is.
Actually, the brothels have tenuous legality. If people feel even more unease at being the only state to have legal hoing, then they might revoke that privelege and the brothel owners and employees stand to lose a considerable amount of money. By having a tax levied on them, they are hoping to endear themselves to the public with the extra money for education and other sundries.
It would be an interesting economic experiment to see how that would work out. Supply siders always say that taxes kill small business. If a group of sole proprietorships and other small businesses (i.e. the brothels) were to get their tax and still make out like bandits, it would seriously weaken the conservative position that taxes are bad.
I don't like paying taxes as much as the next guy, but they are essential to funding the things we need. Without them, all of a sudden there are no more roads or schools and this place becomes a third-world hellhole in a heartbeat. Here is a group of people just begging for taxes to be taken out of the legal work they do and people are shunning them. That money could be used to buy textbooks, fix potholes, whatever.
But the money would come from brothels, so it's not gonna happen.
