Van and the Veep

Vice President Dick Cheney is scheduled to speak tomorrow at the Waco Hilton to help raise funds for Republican Congressional candidate Van Taylor.

Also scheduled, a protest of the vice president by members of Friends of Peace and other activist groups.

Waco, Tx. - Activists from Waco Friends of Peace and other local organizations will demonstrate outside of the hotel where Vice President Dick Cheney will be attending a Republican campaign fundraiser on Monday. April 10. The protest will start at 10 AM outside the Waco Hilton.

"With Cheney's approval rating in the US at 18%, we will express the outrage of 246 million Americans over the policies and actions of this man," Northcutt said. "Cheney was one of the major architects of the illegal and counterproductive war on Iraq, a conduit for no-bid contracts for Halliburton, and a continuing proponent of torture by the U.S."

This is supposed to be a peaceful demonstration, which usually means hippies. I tend to be dismissive toward hippies, I'm not sure why though. It's not exactly as though I am clean cut and don't wear sandals everyday. It's just that I'm not 65 and I haven't been wearing the same poncho since Woodstock. Many of our aims are the same, it's just that I believe in the beauties of order and using the political machine to accomplish them. I'm only so much anti-establishment.

Besides, my favorite flavor of ice cream used to be Wavy Gravy (Ed. note: This is before I became lactose intolerant. Space Monkey believes it is psychosomatic; I, on the other hand, believe the stopped up toilets I leave in my wake are very real).

I won't be at the event tomorrow, so someone else will have to tell me how it goes. For one thing, I wasn't exactly invited. I could probably have bought a ticket or really tried to pull some strings to go, but I didn't want to pay and I didn't want to spend my weekend trying to get in.

And the truth is, I built this thing up so much in my mind that it could not possibly have lived up to it. I pictured myself shaking hands with the veep and maybe even doing a funny Penguin impersonation before being tackled by Secret Service. In reality, I probably would have had about enough time to get a picture while shaking his hand before being ushered off so that he could greet the next person in line. That's not as exciting.

So, I'll probably just watch the coverage on CNN from the safety and security of my Common Sense Lair (where everything makes perfect sense, at least to me).
