Last endorsement post of the primary season
I think it is fairly self-evident that I will be voting for Chris Bell tomorrow, but that is not the only election going on.
In District 299 in Travis County, Judge Charlie Baird is running in the Democratic Primary. If that is your neck of the woods, I highly recommend you pulling the lever (or pushing the button, I guess) for him.
In SD-19, Carlos Uresti is running against turd burglar Sen. Frank Madla. If you vote for Madla tomorrow, I just don't see how you could possibly ever step out of the shower again ("Can't get clean; must scrub off taint of Madla.")
In my area, the race for McLennan County District Judge will be decided tomorrow. Period. Former Waco mayor Linda Ethridge and sitting Judge Jim Lewis are running against each other in the GOP primary. There is no Democratic challenger waiting for them.
I didn't get to sit down with both candidates like I wanted to, but I have a made up mind on whom to endorse for my Republican readers. The Trib endorsement in this race ran Sunday, and they decided to back Linda Ethridge. I do not agree.
I think many things do need changing in the county, but I don't feel as though any of them are too radical as to require a new district judge. Jim Lewis has ably carried out his duties for some time and I just don't feel a change in office holders is warranted here. I do have my problems with Lewis, one of which is that he bolted the Democratic Party to run as a Republican this time. But I was turned off by Ethridge's negative campaigning. Full disclosure: Ethridge was the mayor when a good friend of mine, Kathy Rice, was fired from her job as Waco city manager. I don't feel that that influenced my decision in this particular instance, though.
There are a host of other races going on, some with primary challengers, some not. If you have the time, recommend that you look at the Texas League of Women Voters Guide to help decide on some of your local races.
I'm using my dose of common sense to vote for Bob Gammage to be the next Governor of Texas.
