Really, sometimes the headlines just write themselves.
With Carole Strayhorn trailing Gov. Perry by a huge margin in the GOP primary, she's travelling the state to bolster support. Something she probably should have been doing all autumn.
Anywho, she's in Waco tonight. I would go, but somehow my invitation got lost in the mail... Plus, I will be at work. Natch. Local supporter Bill Clifton had this to say about her:
"I'm concerned about the poll numbers, but I still like her best," Clifton said. "A lot of her approaches are very common sense to me."
Always nice to see the blog get mentioned.
Strayhorn has always had two things against her: Getting people interested in her and getting people who are not wingnuts to the polls on March 7. Both are nigh imposible. The people who show up to the Republican primary are the most conservative group in the party. And Rick Perry has them in the bag, more or less. Now, if she could get Democrats and Independents to vote in the primary for her, things might change.
But Democrats have their own primary to worry about now. Some are choosing between Bob Gammage and Chris Bell (and Felix Alvarado, too, I guess). Some have realized that voting in the Republican primary would only make it that much harder for us to win in the general. And some are so despondent over the Democrat's situation in Texas that they've given up voting and started drinking.
The Independents aren't a much better prospect, either. They are all saving themselves to sign the petition to get Kinky Friedman on the ballot.
What's a grandma to do?
Unless it turns out Rick Perry really is gay or something else pretty drastic happens, Strayhorn just isn't going to win the primary and she hasn't established the machinery necessary to get all the signatures she would need to run as an Independent, where she would probably also lose.
She should probably get ready for retirement and spend time with the grandkids.
